During the press conference, Tom Heilandt presented Shiology to Hong Kong Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu, proposing a "Shiology + Medicine" model to enhance Hong Kong's brand as a "City of Longevity." Published by Hong Kong Joint Publishing, Shiology is divided into seven chapters: Overview, Eater Needs, Food Acquisition, Shance Order, Shiance Civilization, Shiology Charts and Index, and Appendices. Shiology takes Shiance as its research object
The World Shiology Forum has been held four times in China, Japan, and Turkey. "Shiology" refers to activities and phenomena related to food production and utilization, encompassing three domains: food, eaters, and shiance order, which are fundamental to human survival. Among the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), 13 are closely linked to shaince issues. Shiology, as a knowledge system, studies food-related phenomena, reveals their objective laws, and addresses shiance-related challenges. It integrates disciplines such as agronomy, food science, nutrition, and agricultural economics into a unified framework with the mission of "enhancing individual health and longevity, optimizing social order, and ensuring the continuity of the human populations."
In his speech, Tom Heilandt stated, "The UN 2030 Agenda outlines 17 Sustainable Development Goals aimed at addressing critical challenges facing humanity. With only five years left until the deadline, we are still far from achieving these goals. In this context, Shiology has emerged as a new interdisciplinary field centered on eaters and dedicated to solving human shiance-related problems. Without resolving these issues, most SDGs will remain unattainable."
UN Secretary-General Supports the World Shiology Forum
United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres, in his address to the 4th World Shiology Forum, emphasized that the world is facing a global food crisis. He called for an immediate transformation of food systems to make them more sustainable, equitable, and resilient, and urged support for those revitalizing food systems. He advocated for "fundamentally addressing the food crisis, establishing people-centered systems where profit is secondary, and eradicating hunger." In response to Guterres' call, the 5th World Shiology Forum will focus on food system challenges, exploring ways to tackle major global issues and providing systemic solutions for food system transformation.

Global Food Systems and SDGs Report
The Global Food Systems and SDGs Report, a key outcome of the 5th World Shiology Forum, was jointly prepared by the Research Center for Shiology of Renmin University of China, the China Economic Research Institute, and the Secretariat of the World Shiology Forum, with contributions from over 100 countries. Based on more than 240 quantitative indicators, the report establishes a "National Food System Evaluation Framework," assessing countries' food systems across three dimensions: food acquisition (40%), food-body coupling (30%), and sustainability (30%). It also highlights 100 exemplary corporate brands in the food sector that demonstrate social responsibility (ESG) and commitment to sustainable development (SDG), aiming to inspire global food enterprises to embrace sustainable practices. Dual Crises: Hunger and Overeating
Liu Guangwei, Chair of the Forum's Academic Committee, noted that adopting a broad perspective on food means recognizing the shiance issues. Currently, global challenges such as hunger and overeating coexist, food loss and waste remain uncontrolled, agricultural soils are severely degraded, and unequal food distribution fuels conflicts. As the United Nations marks its 80th anniversary, the forum's outcomes are expected to provide academic support for the UN's "Post-2030" sustainable development framework, promoting the concept of "advancing governance through Shiology" and encouraging nations to shift from "food self-sufficiency" to "systemic co-governance," injecting new momentum into the SDGs.
