To understand the basics of shiology you need to remember 5 terms and their relationships:
Eater: The eater is at the center of the shiology universe. All humans need to eat sufficient, safe, nutritious, healthy, tasty food.
Shi (食) – The Chinese character “食”, works both as a noun and a verb. As a noun it refers to food, covering everything edible from basic ingredients to complete meals. As a verb, it means “to eat”.
Shiance is the totality of human activities, systems, and consequences related to food—how we produce, prepare, distribute, share, consume it, how our bodies process it and finally eliminating it. It encompasses not just the economic and ecological aspects of food systems, but also gastronomy, taste, cultural traditions, and the sensory experience of eating.
At its core, Shiance is centered on the eater recognizing food and eating as a deeply human, five-senses experience that connects body, mind, culture, and society.
Shiance goes thus beyond the conventional concept of “food systems” in that it is:
· Human- and eater-centered, not just supply chain–centered.
· Inclusive of gastronomy and culture, treating taste, cooking traditions, and the joy of eating as essential—not peripheral—elements.
· Purpose-driven, guided by a 2100 vision that:
o Everyone can live a healthy life beyond 100 years,
o Food-related conflicts are resolved, and
o Humanity survives and thrives through sustainable food practices.
Shiology (study of food and eat) is the integrated knowledge system devoted to understanding, improving, and transforming Shiance. It explores how food systems—when viewed through the lens of the eater—can evolve to support human health, cultural identity, environmental balance, and global peace.
Shiology:
· Combines science, culture, ethics, and innovation to generate actionable insights.
· Is transdisciplinary, uniting perspectives from nutrition, agriculture, gastronomy, education, economics, philosophy, public health, and technology.
· Is solution-focused, always asking: How can food and eating serve people—and the planet—better?
Shiology Slogan for a Healthier Future: Eat Enough, Eat Variety, Eat Longevity
Shiance as its primary object of study of shiology. Its overarching mission is to comprehensively and thoroughly address humanity’s shiance issues— with the shiology vision to extend human health- and lifespans, optimize social order, and ensure the continuity of the species.
Shiorder (the Order) describes the complex governance of shiance – the food and eat ecosystem. It is the framework or the order in which the principles of Shiance and Shiology are applied, focusing on how food systems can be structured to support global health, environmental sustainability, and social justice.
It’s about creating a holistic, integrated system where the needs of the eater (from health to pleasure) are met, and food systems are designed to serve humanity’s long-term survival and thriving.
Structurally, Shiology is defined by three triangles the “Shiology Triangle”, the Shiance triangle and the Shiorder triangle.
