Jelena Milešević

I am biochemist, holding Msc in Nutrition and Rural Development, and PhD in Food Technology, with more than thirteen years of experience in the field of food and nutrition research. My research focus is food consumption, following trends in dietary patterns in Central Eastern Europe and Balkan countries and its relation to transformation of food systems. I am involved in various European projects dealing with research in the field of nutrition challenges and finding solutions i.e. micronutrient  deficiencies, nutritional inadequacies in vulnerable groups, reviving the use of nutritionally rich underutilized crops etc. As FAO national nutrition consultant, I had the opportunity to dive into the field of development of food system based dietary guidelines, following FAO recommendations. This work included policy analysis, evidence collection and review, analysis of dietary intake and food consumption on population level. Evidence collection and review required profound search and analysis of nutrition, health, environment, sociodemographic and agriculture indicators and their relationship with SDG goals. I also had the opportunity to work in WHO HQ on health, nutrition and NCDs reduction policy and strategy analysis in low- and middle-income countries around the globe.  

I am actively involved in European partnership for sustainable food system transformation -FutureFoods, acting National observer in EFSA Food consumption database network for Serbia, and secretary officer for EuroFIR-INFOODS affairs. As a Senior Scientific Associate, I am acting  Principal Investigator in two EU projects, editing Special issue in Frontiers in Nutrition journal and a mentor of a PhD student.
