Ahmed Riyaz Jauharee

Dr. Ahmed Riyaz Jauharee is a distinguished marine ecologist and academic leader specializing in tropical fisheries and ocean sciences, with over three decades of experience bridging research, education, and policy in the Maldives. He earned his PhD in Functional Ecology from the University of Montpellier, France, and a Master’s in Tropical Marine Ecology and Fisheries Biology from Australia’s James Cook University, laying the foundation for his interdisciplinary approach to marine conservation and sustainable fisheries. Dr. Jauharee began his career in 1991 at the Educational Development Centre of the Maldives Ministry of Education, where he revolutionized marine science education by re-designing the nation’s first Fisheries Science curriculum. His work in textbook development and teacher training helped institutionalize ocean literacy in Maldivian schools, fostering a generation of environmentally conscious citizens. In 2008, he transitioned to research, joining the Maldives Marine Research Institute (formerly Marine Research Centre) as a lead scientist. Over 16 years, he spearheaded critical studies on tuna fisheries ecology, including the dynamics of livebait fisheries—a linchpin of the Maldivian pole-and-line tuna industry. His research combined field-based assessments with stakeholder engagement, supporting evidence-based fisheries management and climate adaptation strategies for vulnerable coastal communities. Dr. Jauharee has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications and book chapters, sharing insights on small-scale fisheries, ecosystem resilience, and climate impacts. His collaborative work with government agencies and NGOs has informed national policies on sustainable fishing and marine biodiversity conservation. In September 2024, he was appointed Dean of the College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences at the Maldives National University, where he now leads academic programs, fosters industry partnerships, and champions research to address pressing challenges in marine resource management. Driven by a commitment to education and sustainability, Dr. Jauharee continues to shape the future of ocean sciences in the Maldives and beyond.
