Marija Knez

Dr. Marija Knez is a nutrition scientist with a comprehensive interdisciplinary background in human nutrition, food science, and sustainable food systems. She currently holds the position of Senior Scientific Associate at the Centre of Research Excellence in Nutrition and Metabolism (CENM), Institute for Medical Research, University of Belgrade. Her work is focused on public health nutrition, with a particular emphasis on improving dietary assessment methodologies and nutrition surveillance at the national and European levels. Dr. Knez has been actively involved in several EFSA-supported national dietary surveys, contributing to the harmonization of food consumption data collection in accordance with EU Menu methodology. Her research supports the implementation of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals especially SDG 2 (Zero Hunger) and SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being), by addressing micronutrient deficiencies, promoting dietary diversity, and supporting sustainable and resilient food systems. Her skills include food classification systems, nutrient adequacy assessment, and recipe calculation methods that inform both research and policy in public health nutrition. In addition, Dr Knez also contributes to the Horizon Europe BIOVALUE project, which explores the health and environmental potential of underutilized crops. Her work involves bridging scientific evidence with practical applications, including dietary modelling, the use of food composition data, and engagement with relevant stakeholders. Furthermore, Dr. Knez plays an active role in the DIVERSICROP COST Action, where she supports the valorization of neglected and underutilized crops such as chickpeas, peas, and rye. Through the documentation of traditional recipes and food practices, she contributes to efforts that integrate cultural heritage with contemporary sustainability and nutrition objectives. Dr. Knez’s career is marked by a strong commitment to interdisciplinary research, international collaboration, and the advancement of public health nutrition through science-based policy and sustainable food system development.
