Reply Letter from ECOSOC President Lok Bahadur Thapa

United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC)

The United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), one of the six principal organs of the UN, serves as the central body for advancing the three dimensions of sustainable development—economic, social, and environmental—it assists the UN General Assembly in promoting international economic and social cooperation and development.

COSOC consists of 54 member states elected by the UN General Assembly, with 18 members rotating annually for three-year terms.

ECOSOC President: Lok Bahadur Thapa

Lok Bahadur Thapa was elected President of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) for the 2025—2026 session on July 31, 2025. His key priorities include advancing hunger eradication, promoting digital entrepreneurship and youth participation, strengthening climate action and resilience-building, and reforming the international financial architecture, all in commemoration of ECOSOC's 80th anniversary.

Mr. Thapa also serves as the Chair of the Global Coordination Bureau of the Least Developed Countries (LDCs), dedicated to amplifying the collective voice of LDCs in global decision-making processes.

Recently, Lok Bahadur Thapa, President of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), sent a letter to Mr. Liu Guangwei, Chairman of the World Shiology Forum (WSF), highly affirming the innovative value of the interdisciplinary theory of Shiology and the significant contributions of the WSF in advancing global food security and sustainable development, injecting strong momentum into global food governance.

In his letter, President Thapa stated, "With less than five years remaining to achieve the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the work of organizations like the World Shiology Forum has become particularly crucial." Founded in 2017, the World Shiology Forum (WSF) is a high-end international dialogue platform rooted in the theoretical foundation of Shiology and aligned with the UN SDGs. It is committed to systematically addressing multiple challenges facing the global food system, such as shortages, waste, and structural imbalances, and has provided an important platform and practical pathways for breaking through global dilemmas in the food system and advancing the implementation of the SDGs.

Shared Vision: Food System Transformation as a Global Consensus

As ECOSOC President, Mr. Thapa noted, "I have identified several priority areas essential for transformative progress in sustainable development. One of these is promoting the transformation of agriculture and food systems to enhance food security and rural resilience—an objective highly consistent with the theme of the 5th World Shiology Forum held last October: "Food Systems and Sustainable Development." Focusing on critical issues including global governance, food security, and healthy longevity, the 5th WSF represents concrete action to implement President Xi Jinping's "Global Governance initiative" and the UN's 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. UN Secretary-General António Guterres delivered a written message to the forum.

In his letter, President Thapa emphasized, "The work of the forum and its participants has made valuable contributions to addressing global challenges such as food shortages, food waste, and unequal access to nutrition." The 5th WSF released the Global Food Systems and SDGs Report (2025), translating the "holistic principle" of Shiology into governance practice and advancing global food governance from "consensus" to "action".

Integrated Values: Shiology Bridges Diverse Development Issues

Thapa noted,"Food security is interconnected with other priorities of my tenure, such as enhancing climate resilience and promoting youth economic development worldwide"—a perspective deeply resonant with Shiology's core framework. Shiology, structured around "eater, food, and food order," systematically integrates humanity's multi-level needs—from basic sustenance and abundance to safety, longevity, and sustainability—offering interdisciplinary solutions to these complex global challenges.

Looking Ahead: Collaborating for a New Global Food Order

President Thapa affirmed, "ECOSOC highly values the critical role of civil society in advancing sustainable development. We encourage the forum to continue leveraging its international platform to bring together global stakeholders in driving food system transformation and realizing our shared vision for humanity's future."

Applications to host the Sixth World Shiology Forum are now officially open. Relevant institutions and experts worldwide are invited to participate and contribute to the co-drafting of the Global Food System and SDGs Report (2026), jointly shaping the next chapter in global food governance.
