Goh Bey Hing

Prof. Ts. Dr. Goh Bey Hing

Professor & Head of Sunway Biofunctional Molecules Discovery Centre (SBMDC), Sunway University, Malaysia; Chartered Biologist (CBiol), Royal Society of Biology, UK. Recognized as Top Research Scientist Malaysia.

His research centers on the food-health-sustainability nexus of global food systems aligned with SDGs. Key research lines cover functional lipids, food-grade delivery systems (e.g., red palm oil Pickering emulsions stabilized by plant-protein fibrils), bioprospection of Southeast Asian natural bioactive compounds, and high-value agri-food innovation. He serves as co-editor of Nanobiosensors for the Food Industry (Springer, 2025), covering food safety, quality monitoring and traceability technologies.

Academic output: Over 300 peer-reviewed publications with >10,000 citations and an H-index of 71; supervised 17 PhD graduates.

Policy & Regional Capacity Building: He provides expert consultations for the Malaysian Parliament, Ministry of Health and WHO regulatory mapping. He leads cross-ASEAN international research consortia, advocating equitable, evidence-based food security solutions for low- and middle-income economies.

As a co-author of the Global Shiance (Food Systems) and SDGs Report, he will deliver Malaysia’s national food system insights: Malaysia’s rice self-sufficiency stands at 63–70% while vegetable self-sufficiency falls below 50%, leading to rising food import reliance. Critical local challenges include affordable healthy diets, climate-induced agricultural disruptions, smallholder livelihood vulnerability, and sustainable palm oil governance. Meanwhile, national strengths in functional food R&D, agri-food biotechnology and food safety sensing create opportunities for regional & global collaboration.
